CPI(M) yet to decide on Ullal candidate

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: There seems to be confusion in the Communist Party of India (Marxist) over the selection of its candidate byelection to the Ullal Assembly constituency that is to be held on June 2.

Even as the Dakshina Kannada District Committee, in a release, announced the name of the candidate on Tuesday, the party's State committee leaders said here on Wednesday that they were yet to take a final decision.

MLA G.V. Sriram Reddy told presspersons that the candidate would be selected by tomorrow, and that three persons were in the race.

Asked if the CPI (M) would seek support of the Janata Dal (Secular) in putting up a common candidate, he said, "We have not sought nor will be seek help from JD (S), as it is an ally of BJP." Referring to Home Minister M.P. Prakash's remark on a common candidate, Mr. Reddy said that the party had not received any official intimation yet, he added.

Party sources said that Balakrishna Shetty, Ramachandra Uchil and B. Madava were in the race.
