KARIMNAGAR: The ambitious Andhra Pradesh Community based tank management project, which is aimed to strengthen ayacut under the tanks and promotion of improved water efficiency practices among the farming community, would be implemented in 20 mandals of the district. On an experimental basis, it would be implemented in five mandals in the first phase and later extend it to the remaining mandals. The major works under the project are strengthening of bund, sluice and weirs repairs, repairs of feeder channels and distribution canals. Incidentally, the community participation and their contribution is compulsory in this project. In a press note here on Wednesday, Collector M. V. Satyanarayana said that priority would be given to tanks which were not repaired during the last five years and having an ayacut of 1,000 acres. The community interest and willingness to pay contribution would be also taken into consideration. It is estimated that the budget of about Rs. 2 crore would be allocated for each mandal for taking up the repairs of the tanks with the help of community and NGOs. He said that the objective of the project to increase the agricultural productivity with effective management of tank and water usage system by the water users associations. He said that they had instructed the authorities to conduct survey and identification of tanks for the implementation of the project.
