Jailbreaks continue despite security

BHUBANESWAR: Even as the Orissa government time and again claims to have taken measures to tighten security around its jail and police stations, 66 persons escaped from the custody during the last five years.

As per the latest figures posted by the Home Department here, as many as 35 undertrials escaped in 2003. On August 1, 2003, 15 undertrials fled the Chhatrapur sub-jail. Last year, 10 persons, including three convicts, managed to dodge the State's security establishments.

During 2004, four out of six persons escaped from police custody while highest 10 persons broke police shackles. In 2006, eight jail and policy custody breaks were reported.

Till now, 61 undertrials and five convicts escaped from different jail and police custodies on 29 occasions during the past five years.
