Conduct raids once in 15 days: Collector

DINDIGUL: Stern action will be initiated against those who employ children in their shop or business establishments, said the Collector, R. Vasuki.

She advised the Labour officials to conduct surprise checks at different places once in 15 days to eradicate child labour from the district.

A total of 15 child labourers were rescued from vegetable sweet and petty shops, hotel, bakery and a medical shop in Kodaikanal town during a surprise raid conducted by the members of Child Labour Eradication Committee on Tuesday.

A majority of the children told that they were school students and working on holidays for income.

Ms. Vasuki directed the coordinators of Sarva Siksha Abhyan to take immediate steps to admit them to schools.

The team had raided shops and hotels at Moonjikkal, bus stand, market, Mudaliyarpuram, Kurinji Andavar Temple, Seven Road, Pillar Rock and Guna Parai areas in the town, she added.

The district administration had constituted a special committee comprising a Labour Inspector, a doctor, a coordinator from Sarva Siksha Abhyan, a Deputy Labour Inspector in Palani and an Assistant Labour Inspector in Kodaikanal.

Welfare aid worth Rs.23.42 lakh had been disbursed to 5,144 disabled beneficiaries in the district in 2006-07, according to the Collector.
