Chennai: Eighteen people were presented with the University of Madras Tamil Mandram prizes by Vice-Chancellor S. Ramachandran here on Wednesday. They included winners of the essay, oratorical and poetry competitions held for the staff, students and research scholars of the University. He said the Mandram, formed in 2002, had been involved in significant work in the field of Tamil research over the last three years.
"All possible help"
The University would extend all possible assistance to the Academy, he added. Former Vice-Chancellor of the Tamil University in Thanvajur, E. Sundaramoorthy, said councils such as the Tamil Mandram were forums for exchange of ideas on Tamil literature of the past and present. He pointed out that in 1892, C. Swaminatha Iyer of Sirkazhi formed a similar Mandram called `Ubayogamana Arivai Parappach Cheyyum Sabai', which translates into a group formed for the purpose of spreading useful knowledge. University registrar-in-charge M. Aranganatham, Tamil Mandram coordinator Aranga. Ramalingam and University of Madras Employees Association president V.C. Kamalakannan participated.
