CHENNAI: It is that time of the year when students who appeared for the Class XII public examinations decide what course to pursue. In an attempt to inform students about available courses, a four-day educational exhibition, being organised here by the University of Madras, opened on Wednesday.

The University is offering 12 new courses from this academic year at its three campuses in Marina, Guindy and Taramani. Various departments will offer courses such as M.Phil in Econometrics, a diploma in Cyber Crimes and Information Security and a postgraduate diploma in Advanced Aquaculture.

The Madras University's Institute of Distance Education has introduced a master's degree in Vaishnavism. Courses introduced at affiliated colleges include a master's in Tourism and Travel Management, B.Ed programmes in Special Education (covering streams such as visual impairment, learning disability, mental retardation, locomotor and neurological disorders and hearing impairment), postgraduate diplomas in Developmental Therapy and Special Education (multiple disabilities: physical and neurological).

Salient features of each department and employment prospects of courses offered were displayed in the stalls put up at the University's Senate House. Prospectus and application forms were available for sale. The exhibition will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 .30 p.m. on all four days. A total of 300 applications were sold.
