New bank branch

Chennai: Andhra Bank Chairman and Managing Director K. Ramakrishnan inaugurated a new bank branch at Sholinganallur. The branch has a 24-hour ATM facility. Mr. Ramakrishnan said the bank's profits had grown by 21 per cent in 2006-07. The bank offers 9.75 per cent interest on 400-day fixed deposits till May 31, he said.

Free eye camp

Hindu Mission Hospital conducted a free eye camp at Zameen Pallavaram on Wednesday. About 100 patients were screened and 22 cases referred for free surgery.

Cornea donation programme

Rajan Eye Care Hospital and Rotary Club launched a hospital corneal retrieval programme on Tuesday. The programme would encourage families to donate eyes of a loved one after his or her death. Rotary International President Elect Wilfred Wilkinson presented citations to the families of eye donors. He also inaugurated advanced microscopy and microsurgical facilities at the hospital.

Rural health centre

Rotary Club of Madras Chenna Patna will build a health centre at Swami Dayananda Rotary Model School in Kadulur village, which was affected by the tsunami. Rotary International President Elect Wilfred Wilkinson laid the foundation stone on Wednesday. The project estimated to cost about Rs. 6 lakh is funded by the Rotary Club of Birmingham, UK. Kancheepuram District Collector Pradeep Yadav inaugurated a playpen in the school.

Encroachments removed

Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Wakf Board S. Hyder Ali has been supervising removal of encroachments on Wakf property. About 10 houses were demolished in Tiruvallur with the help of Uthukottai revenue officials and the police department on Saturday. The Board would have other encroachments removed soon, a release issued by the Board said.

Works inspected

Minister for Housing and Slum Clearance Suba Thangavelan on Tuesday inspected the maintenance work being carried out by the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board at the quarters for government employees in K.R.N Ramasamy Nagar. The work, which is estimated to cost Rs. 25 lakh, includes replacing damaged doors and drainage pipes and giving a fresh coat of paint to the walls. The Minister also said the residents' demand to renovate the community hall would be met, according to a press release.
