Gang attacks, robs traders of cash
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI
: An armed gang waylaid and attacked two textile merchants at Tondiarpet on Tuesday evening and robbed them of Rs. 5 lakh.
Police said the two businessmen from Erode, Mani of Moolakoundanpalayam and Thangaraj of Chennampalayam, visited the city frequently on business. They supplied textile goods to wholesale merchants and used to return home with cash payments.
On Tuesday, when they were travelling in an autorickshaw towards the railway station, six persons followed them on three motorcycles and waylaid the vehicle. Two members of the gang snatched the suitcase from the merchants. When Mani resisted, he was attacked with a knife by the gang. Fearing risk to his life, the victim parted with the suitcase.
The Seven Wells police have registered a case. A hunt is on to nab the accused, the police said.
