Workshop on bio-safety

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Chief Secretary J. Harinarayan on Wednesday said that only through capacity building of stakeholders could the benefits of modern biotechnology be harnessed in a safe and sustainable manner.

He was speaking at the inaugural of a workshop on bio-safety issues organised by Ministry of Environment, Forests, Science and Technology and Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB).

Mr. Harinarayan recalled issues of bio-safety of genetically engineered crops/genes that emerged in the Rio Declaration, advising all nations to adopt two major principles on the issues. They include not introducing any new crop either if harmful effects were recognised or if the target groups of farmers were not receptive to the new crop and the principle stipulating that polluting agencies and companies shall be held responsible for damage to the environment.
