Passport fraud: techie arrested

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Sridevi, a software engineer, who secured a passport allegedly using a forged verification letter of an IAS officer, was arrested by the Market police on Wednesday.

Sridevi got an opportunity to work in New Jersey in the US on behalf of her Hyderabad-based company. Hailing from Anantapur, she initially applied for the passport and got the police verification done through the Anantapur police.

However, her passport application was rejected due to some technicalities. "Hence, she approached a broker in Secunderabad to secure the passport under Tatkal scheme," the police said. The broker handed over the passport to her on March 28.

The agent allegedly submitted a verification certificate forging the signature of an IAS officer, P. Krishnaiah. The Regional Passport Office started inquiring with the authorities and contacted Mr. Krishnaiah's office only to learn that he did not sign the letter.
