COIMBATORE: The Indian Association of Gastro-intestinal Endosurgeons will hold a conference on latest technology and surgical skills improvement at V.G. Hospital here from May 18 to 20. The meet will also serve as an accredited continuing medical education course of the association for surgeons who want to perfect their skills in laparoscopy, organising chairman of the conference V. Venkatesh told presspersons on Wednesday. A certificate would be issued to nearly 200 surgeons who were expected to take part in the conference, Dr. Venkatesh, a laparoscopic surgeon and the Director of the hospital, said. Experts from Singapore, Malaysia, Pakistan and Sri Lanka would form part of the faculty at the meet. Leading these and others from within the country would be Joel Leroy from France. A meet-the-professor session would be on from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to serve as a free learning centre for young surgeons. Dr. Leroy would also teach new suturing and knotting methods. Tough surgeries such as the ones to treat cancer in the stomach, oesophagus, colon and rectum and also those to correct hernia and remove cyst in the pancreas would be performed. "Nearly 200 surgeries will be performed free of cost," Dr. Venkatesh said. These would cover 30 different types of laparoscopic procedures. A workshop on uterine fibroid, cervical cancer and other gynaecological surgeries would be held. A teleconference with a hospital in France would include demonstration of robotic surgery. "The aim is to update the surgeons on new frontiers in minimal access surgery," he said. Explaining why Coimbatore had been chosen as the venue, Dr. Venkatesh pointed out that this region was known as the hub of laparoscopy procedures. Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital Dean T.P. Kalaniti would inaugurate the conference. Manufacturers of laparoscopy equipment and sutures would display their products at an exhibition, the surgeon said.
