Cops injured

NEW DELHI: A head constable and a constable with the Special Staff of the East Delhi police sustained injuries in an encounter with an alleged extortionist near the ITO flyover on Wednesday. The alleged extortionist, who also sustained a bullet injury in the thigh, was arrested. Acting on a tip-off that Baldev, a registered bad character of the Shakarpur police station who has been on the run for the past three years, would come to ITO near the Police Headquarters on Wednesday morning to collect extortion money , a team comprising Head Constable Manoj and Virender laid a trap.

Around 10 a.m., the police spotted Baldev near the Vikas Minar bus shelter and challenged him, asking him to surrender. Baldev allegedly tried to flee, but Head Constable Manoj and Constable Virender overpowered him. Baldev, who is a body builder, kicked Virender in the stomach several times and managed to free himself from his grip. He then whipped out a knife and allegedly stabbed Manoj twice in the thigh. Manoj who had caught Baldev from behind fell on the road. Baldev was fleeing when Manoj shot at him in the thigh from his service firearm to subdue him.

Boy rescued

NEW DELHI: A five-year-old boy allegedly abducted from Shastri Nagar here last month has been rescued by the North Delhi police from the clutches of his uncle and his accomplice at Jamui in Bihar. Both the accused have been arrested. Virender Kumar on April 24 lodged a complaint with the Sarai Rohilla police alleging that his son Ashish had gone missing. The next day the case was converted to that of kidnapping after the police failed to trace him.

Enquiries revealed that Ashish was last seen with his 56-year-old uncle Madan Gopal, who had also gone missing.

Meanwhile, Virender received a ransom call on May 4, in which the caller demanded Rs. 20 lakh to release Ashish. The police traced the call to Jamui. Investigations indicated the involvement of a labourer Deepak . The police mounted a raid at Deepak's Jamui residence and rescued Ashish. Deepak and Madan were arrested from there.

`Sheila misquoted'

NEW DELHI: Following a furore over her comments about people coming from other States to the Capital in search of a livelihood, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Wednesday evening clarified that it was not her intention to hurt the feelings of anyone.

Ms. Dikshit had said that Delhi was an attractive city and that there was nothing to stop people from States like Bihar and U.P. from coming for employment and then settling down here. These people, she added, do not have the desire to go back to their respective States because of the modern infrastructure and opportunities that exist in the Capital.
