dated May 11, 1957: Lok Sabha meets

Members of the new Lok Sabha were sworn in on May 10. Seth Govind Das, appointed by the President to act as the Speaker, conducted the proceedings. The first to be sworn in was Prime Minister Nehru. He was followed by the former Speaker, Mr. M. Ananthasayanam Iyengar, and the members of the Cabinet and Deputy Ministers. Members from different States were called in alphabetical order and they took their oath. Earlier, members stood in silence for two minutes in memory of those who fell in the War of Independence of 1857.
