COIMBATORE: The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University will select hospitals to be identified as `centres of excellence' in their field of specialisation. It has identified Gem Hospital to be declared a Centre of Excellence in the field of surgical gastroenterology, its Vice-Chancellor Meer Mustafa Hussain said here on Thursday. Inaugurating a twin theme international laparoscopy conference and workshop on endo-hernia and gynaecology at the PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Prof. Hussain listed the various advantages of laparoscopy surgery. He urged the doctors and professors participating in the conference to keep abreast of the advancements in laparoscopy. "Even though it involves minimum invasive technique and early return to work, the surgery expense is still high because of equipment costs. We have to work to make it cheaper. Its advantages should reach people in remote areas also," he said. A. Muruganathan, Dean of Studies, Indian Medical Association, said: "The second most important duty of a doctor, next to treating patients, is to teach, train and share knowledge with colleagues and juniors." He urged the participants to undergo training in their respective fields to keep pace with the changes happening every day.
