Can't recollect affidavit details: Pappu Yadav

Staff Reporter

As parliamentarian he should have better memory: magistrate

  • "Not aware of legal terminologies"
  • Continue education in jail: court

    Pappu Yadav

NEW DELHI: Member of Parliament Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav had a tough time in a Delhi court on Thursday when he pleaded that he did not remember details of an affidavit, in which he allegedly furnished false information in 1998 and was facing prosecution for perjury. During cross-examination, Mr. Yadav said he did not remember whether he was chargesheeted in a murder case in 1998-99.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kamini Lau said that being a parliamentarian he should have better memory.

    Wrong address

Testifying as defence witness, the MP pleaded no knowledge of the contents of the affidavit, in which he had allegedly furnished wrong address, and said he had signed on it on his father's instructions.

The magistrate remarked in a lighter vein that he behaved like an obedient son.

Asked whether he knew about the implications of furnishing wrong information in a court document, the MP said he was not aware of legal terminologies, nor was he with his counsel at the time it was drafted.

At this, the court advised him to continue his education in the Tihar Central Jail, where he is lodged. Mr. Yadav said he had completed higher secondary level education and was now pursuing a degree course with philosophy as a subject.

    Reserves order

The court reserved order on his application requesting that Star Gold and Zee channels be made available to him. It had asked for a report from jail authorities in this regard.
