Corrections and Clarifications

In a report "OVL [ONGC Videsh Limited] strikes gas in Persian Gulf" (May 10, 2007, page 1), a sentence in the fifth paragraph was: "Bushehr, incidentally, is also the site where the Russians are collaborating with the Iranians for building a 1,000 MWan atomic power plant. (sic)" It was an editing error. It should have been "... with the Iranians for building a 1,000 MW atomic power plant."

In the same report the last paragraph and the last sentence of the penultimate paragraph are virtually the same. It was an editing error.

A repetition of paragraphs. In a report "`India won't be cowed down: [Petroleum Minister Murli] Deora" (May 9, 2007), the (original and) second paragraph was: "Mr. Deora told the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday that when U.S. Energy Secretary Sam Bodman, during his previous visit, asked about the fate of the Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline, `we told him that it is not the business of the U.S. We will do what is good for us.'", while the third paragraph was: "Queried about the fate of the Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline by the U.S. Energy Secretary Sam Bodman during his previous visit, Mr. Deora said in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday: `we told him that it is not the business of the U.S. We will do what is good for us.'" It was an editing error again.

A sentence was "The temperature at the Meenambakkam observatory was 42 degrees Celsius between 8.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m." ("A harsh Wednesday for Chennai as mercury soars", Chennai city, May 10, 2007, page 3). That was the highest temperature during the period, not the temperature throughout. Also, the caption of the accompanying photograph said "With the temperature soaring, mirage on the road such as this one have become a common sight". Mirage is something that does not exist, or something that appears near when it is far away. The picture showed the shimmering in a summer haze.

The Guardian in its "Corrections and Clarifications" column (May 8, 2007) states: "In a report about how names chosen by parents may statistically correlate with the future career paths of their daughters, a list of names that end in vowels included two that do not: Sarah and Hannah ("What's in a name?", page 3, G2, May 1, 2007)." The same report appeared in The Hindu, ("Newscape" page, April 30, 2007) as "It's all in the name, be aware of its power".

A snooker report "Higgins takes big lead" ("Sport", May 8, 2007) stated that Sean Murphy was the snooker world champion in 2005. The name should have been Shaun Murphy. The report appeared only in a single edition.

In The Hindu Crossword 8909 (May 10, 2007), clue 11 Across was "Delicious to a few, thro' different within (9)". It should have been "... tho' different within."

It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible. Please specify the edition (place of publication), date and page.
