Tuticorin: Western Railway won the women's title defeating Southern Railway 55-43 in the last match of the four-team super-league in the Tamilnad Mercantile Bank Trophy all-India basketball tournament, organised by TDBA and TBC, at the Tharuvai Stadium here on Thursday. Western Railway emerged the winner with an all-win record, while Southern Railway finished runner-up, losing only to Western Railway. Central Railway defeated KSEB 58-32 for its only win in the other match and finished third. It was sweet revenge for Western Railway as it had lost to Southern Railway in the inter-Railway tournament in Chennai recently. It was a grim struggle between the teams till the interval on Thursday. At the end of first quarter, Southern Railway had a three-point lead (15-12) and Western Railway had a two-point (28-26) lead at the interval. But in the third quarter, the Western Railway players regrouped and accelerated the scoring through Lincy Joseph and Ivy Jackson. Western Railway built up an 11-point lead (47-36) at the end of the third quarter and thereafter, Western Railway never looked back.
The Results: Men: Tamil Nadu 76 (Sivasankar 18) bt Vijaya Bank 57 (Austin 15). Women: Western Railway 55 (Lincy Joseph 24, Ivy Jackson 13) bt Southern Railway 43 (Adhirai 16, Meenalatha 13). Wednesday's results: Men: Tamil Nadu 67 (John De Plato 13, Thangadurai 18) bt Indian Army 54 (Rajesh 16). Women: Southern Railway 57 (Meenalatha 11, Adhirai 10) bt Central Railway 45 (Indhu 12).
TDFA President's XI in last eight
At Kayalpatnam, Tuticorin District Football Association President's XI defeated Rangoon Sports Club (Chennai) 2-0 to enter the quarterfinals of the 42nd annual Manlana Abul Kalam Azad memorial Trophy all-India football tournament at the USC ground on Thursday. The Tuticorin team opened the account in the first minute through Dinesh and completed the tally with a goal by Satheesh five minutes from close. In between, Preston failed to convert a spot kick for the Tuticorin team.
Indian Bank enters final
At Karaikudi, Indian Bank (Chennai) stormed into the final of the 24th Champion Club football tournament for the Universal Trophy with a 5-1 victory over AGORC Football Club (Chennai) at the Krishna Stadium in Velangudi on Thursday. AGORC went into the lead with a fifth minute goal by Jestus Antony. Santha Kumar equalised for Indian Bank in the 20th minute and two minutes later, Mike Sandhur put Indian Bank in the lead. In the second session, Indian Bank completely outplayed AGORC and scored three more goals through Santha Kumar (62nd), Ramesh (65th) and D. Singh (87th).
SSOS Sankari posts win
At Madurai, Balaji goal helped SSOS Sankari (Salem) defeat Thomas Nagar Hockey Club (Kovilpatti) 1-0 in the inaugural match of the 10th annual Kothaiammal memorial Trophy State-level hockey tournament at the Thai MHSS ground in Vadipatti on Thursday.
Other results: Hockey Talent Development Centre, Vadipatti 5 (Vellaichamy, Ganesan, Siva, Pandikumar, Muthu) bt Jothi Sports Club, Palayamkottai 4 (Thangadurai, Paramasivam, Philips Martin, Muthu) in a tie-breaker, regulation time 0-0; Ever Great HC, Vadipatti 2 (Rajapandi, Saravanan) bt Blue Boys HC, Rajapalayam (Balaji).
Easy for Rothmans CC
Rothmans CC and Davaram CC scored comfortable wins over their opponents in the TNCA-SDCA first division league at the Neelambal HSS grounds in Coimbatore recently. Rothmans defeated Vampire Cricket Club by six wickets while Davaram scored a similar win over Rajagopalan CC.
The scores (first division): Vampire CC 124 (M. Ravi four for 29) lost to Rothmans CC 127 for four in 26 overs (Senthil Kumar 46); Rajagopalan CC 96 in 42 overs (Surya four for 25) lost to Davaram CC 98 for four in 20 overs. Second division: Chemplast CC 184 (P.T. Arun Kumar 42) bt SISCOL CC 171 (A. Ramkumar four for 30); Pals CC w/o Free Birds CC.
