IOA to strictly adhere to WADA rules

New Delhi: The Indian Olympic Association has decided to strictly adhere to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) rules and not spare any of the nine offenders who tested positive for banned drugs at the National Games held early this year.

The nine offenders include World Champion pugilist Jenny R.L. and a male boxer Tarundeep Rai besides two weightlifters, two athletes, one women wrestler, one kabaddi player and a cyclist who were caught for doping in the country's premier multi-disciplinary biennial event.

"Now no one can do anything about it. WADA has clear rules of two-year ban for first time offenders and life ban for those caught for the second time," IOA General Secretary Randhir Singh told PTI.

Nine test positive

"Action will be taken against those who have tested positive," he added. According to IOA sources, the `B' samples have been sent to Bangkok for testing.

"There are nine sportspersons who have tested positive for banned substances. We are still in the process of completing the formalities like carrying out `B' sample tests (for those players asking for it)," an IOA official told PTI on condition of anonymity.

"It will take about two weeks to have a final list of offfenders and we cannot give any more details till then," he said.

Meanwhile, Indian Amateur Boxing Federation General Secretary Colonel Muralidharan Raja confirmed the names of Jenny and Tarundeep and said the IABF would slap sanctions on them.

"None of the boxers have asked for their 'B' sample tests. They say they have mistakenly consumed the banned drugs on the prescription of their local doctors," Raja said. — PTI
