DHARWAD: Chief Secretary P.B. Mahishi has called upon senior writers to guide young and upcoming writers in continuing the Dharwad tradition. He was speaking after releasing four volumes of the works of the late Kannada writer Shriranga published by the Department of Kannada and Culture at a function at Karnataka Vidyavardhaka Sangha here on Thursday. Dharwad has long been a centre of art, music and literature. Senior writers should organise workshops and other programmes to help the younger writers to continue the rich tradition of the city, Mr. Mahishi said. Kannada writers were respected for their works in other parts of the country. But still a lot was there to be done for taking Kannada literary works to other States and other countries, he said. Speaking on the four volumes released on the occasion, writer and critic Giraddi Govindraj said Shriranga had organised programmes to popularise Kannada writing even when Marathi influence was dominant in the region. Shriranga's writings always carried a social message. Apart from being a good writer,he was a good critic too, Dr Giraddi said.
