NEW DELHI: Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh will inaugurate a national seminar on "Convergence of Conventional and Distance Modes of Education" and a 15-day-long workshop on "Theory and Practice of Open and Distance Learning" at Indira Gandhi National Open University here this Saturday. Apart from the Minister, University Grants Commission Chairman Sukhdeo Thorat, IGNOU Vice-Chancellor V. N. Rajasekharan Pillai and Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Deepak Pental will also take part in the seminar. Among other things, the seminar will focus on the nature of convergence of conventional and distance modes of education; areas in which convergence is needed; strategies to be adopted towards desirable, effective, viable and cost-effective convergence; possible outcomes of convergence and utilisation by various stakeholders. Talking about the seminar, Prof. Pillai says: "The expansion of education globally and in India, in particular, has been tremendous. These days it is not one single mode but multiple modes of education that are utilised, making use of Internet, information and communication technology, satellites and other different media. Through a convergence of conventional and distance modes of education, we can enhance the reach as well as the quality of both the systems. This union stands to benefit both." About 40 academic counsellors, including some regional directors of IGNOU and those deputed by vice-chancellors of State open universities will undergo training in open and distance learning system, said Santosh Panda, Director of Staff Training and Research Institute of Distance Education at IGNOU.
