10 killed in accident

Tuticorin: Ten persons were killed and one was injured in a collision between a Maruti Omni and a State transport bus on the National Highway 7 at Sevalaperi near Kayathar on Thursday.

The deceased were identified as N. Kannan (van driver), Kamarnisha (24), Jaffernisha (68), Ajima Biwi (50), Liaquat Ali (64), Fatima (22), Saheel (3), Anees Ahamed (9), Sabreen Banu (13) and Badrunisa Begum (16). Nabees Ahamed (10) was admitted to a hospital in Tirunelveli.

Residents of Palakarai in Tiruchi, the victims were heading to Tirunelveli in their Maruti Omni when the accident occurred. The bus was proceeding to Madurai from Tirunelveli.

A case was registered against the bus driver. — Staff Reporter

4 drown in Coleroon

PERAMBALUR: Four persons, including three children, drowned in the Coleroon near Jayamkondam on Thursday.

Police said the victims, hailing from Porur in Chennai, were taking bath in the river. Police identified the dead as M. Perumal (69), his grandchildren Jayasri (12), B. Sathish alias Sankar (12) and K. Dineshkumar (10).

The bodies were sent to the Government Hospital at Jayamkondam for post-mortem. — Staff Reporter

Combing operations continue

Dharmapuri: The District Police, along with personnel from the Anti-Naxal Special Duty Wing and the Special Task Force (STF), continued their combing operations for the second consecutive day on Thursday in forest areas adjoining Nonnakuttipudur, Lalithanur, Moolakadu, Themmarapatti in the district. A senior police official pointed out that the operation was only a routine exercise. — Staff Reporter

Tsunami temporary shelters destroyed

NAGAPATTINAM: As many as 85 tsunami temporary shelters put up at Kuttiyandiyur coastal hamlet on the Tarangampadi in Nagapattinam district were destroyed in a fire that broke out in the early hours on Thursday.

A spark from an oven from one of the shelters caused the fire. No one was injured in the accident. All the inmates have been accommodated in a nearby school. Official sources told The Hindu that the families staying in the 85 temporary shelters had already been allotted permanent houses at Kuttiyandiyur a fortnight ago but they did not move in to the new houses demanding for some development works in the colony. — Special Correspondent

Aspire scholarship test on May 20

CHENNAI: Aspire Learning Company has announced Aspire Admission-Cum-Scholarship Test for students currently in classes VI to XII.

The test, to be conducted across south India on May 20, has been designed to evaluate the student's general knowledge, numerical and verbal abilities, analytical and logical reasoning skills.

Aspire will offer up to 35 per cent scholarships on the tuition fees to help successful students undergo courses such as foundation programme for classes VI to X and AIEEE/BITSAT/IIT-JEE/AIPMT for classes XI and XII.

The last day for submission of applications is May 16 at the Aspire Learning Centres. — Special Correspondent

Attack condemned

ERODE: Journalists belonging to both the print and electronic media came together here on Thursday morning to protest against the killing of three employees of Dinakaran newspaper.

Condemning the attack, R. Sundaram, senior member of the journalist fraternity, said the perpetrators of the attack and those who instigated them should be brought to book.

He said considering the propensity of the violence and loss of three valuable lives, the accused should be booked under the National Security Act.

More than 30 media persons, including photojournalists, shouted slogans condemning the attack.

They demanded the State Government to ensure a vindictiveness-free climate for the press to carry on its duty. Advocate and citizen activist T. Stalin Gunasekaran inaugurated the protest. Head of the Erode Press Association Mohammed Rafi and Secretary Jeeva Thangavel led the agitation.

Radhamani Barathi, councillor of Erode Municipality, expressed her solidarity.

Arrest culprits

SALEM: Kin of a woman who was reportedly murdered, blocked traffic near Salem Government Medical College Hospital here on Thursday demanding that police those responsible for the death.

They claimed that unidentified persons had set Poornima (23) of Arisipalayam afire in her house on Wednesday night.

She was admitted to the hospital. She died on Thursday.

Found dead

OMALUR: A labourer reportedly killed his three children and committed suicide in Omalur, near here, on Wednesday. The police said that Venkatesan (37) of Thindamangalam poisoned his children Ayyanar (13), Sangeetha (9) and Seeni (6) to death. Later, he too consumed poison. Neighbours found them dead in the house and informed the police.

Two killed in lightning

THANJAVUR: Two persons were struck dead by lightning in Thanjavur district on Wednesday night. The deceased were identified as Kothandapani (25) of Kovildevarayampettai near Papanasam and Saravanan (29) of Kabisthalam.

Collector's assurance

KARUR: It would be ensured that each of the 158 village panchayats in Karur district has at least one tank as water source over the next five years, according to Collector T.N. Venkatesh. The New Anna Marumalarchi Thittam would facilitate the ambitious venture.

The scheme has provisions for establishing a new tank and desilting or renovating old ones. The move would help harness the available water resources to the maximum, he said in a press release.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 75.53 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Thursday. The inflow was 1,624 cusecs and the discharge, 1,500 cusecs. - Staff Reporter

Six arrested

Tuticorin: Six persons were arrested at Thermal Nagar on a charge of gambling at a public place on Wednesday. A sum of Rs. 2,900 was seized from them. They were remanded to the judicial custody.

Public hearing on May 19

MADURAI: A public hearing on delimitation of Lok Sabha / Assembly constituencies will be convened on May 19 (Sunday) by the Collector S.S. Jawahar. In the morning, hearing would be held for Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Theni, Madurai and Dindigul districts. Hearing for Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Virudhunagar districts would be conducted in the evening. Officials from the district administration and police department would participate in the meeting, a press release said.
