Kozhikode: The new international departure terminal of Calicut Airport would be put to operational use from Monday. However, the new international arrival terminal of the airport would be ready only by mid-June. Till then, arrival of passengers would be at the existing domestic terminal, Airport Director R. Veeraswamy said here on Thursday. As part of rendering world-class comforts to the travelling public, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) had undertaken a major project work of expansion and modification of the terminal three years ago at an estimated cost of Rs.90 crore. The project had undergone various changes at different stages to introduce latest technology and design for better comforts for the passengers and these changes had caused delay in completion of the project. The entire project work was now in the final stage of completion, Mr.Veeraswamy said. He said that the new departure terminal hall would have 5,615 square metre on the ground floor and 9,762 square metre on the first floor and also roofed drive-in. The hall would be fully air-conditioned. There would be two escalators and two elevators.
Various facilities
The new terminal would have various facilities common to international airports - duty free shop, restaurant, snack bar, stalls, and telephone booths having International Subscribers Dialling, Subscribers Trunk Dialling and local call facility, money exchange counter, child care room, readymade garment shop, cyber café, flight information display system and plasma television.
Better ambience
It would also have better interior ambience with mural paintings, indoor plants, modern lighting and flooring. Nearly 605 new trolleys would be introduced at the new terminal for the convenience of the passengers. An on-line conveyor belt for departure and three aerobridges would also be introduced very shortly in the new terminal, he said.
Car parking area
A new car parking area would also be made available at the airport. The parking area situated opposite the fire station on the eastern side would accommodate 290 cars while the low-level parking area located opposite the international terminal would accommodate 200 cars. The canopy in front of the new terminal is roofed drive-in so that the passengers could alight from their vehicles without getting exposed to rain or sun, Mr. Veeraswamy said.
