THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The ruling LDF and Opposition UDF have shared the honours more or less equally in the local body byelections with the LDF getting a minor edge over its rival. The LDF has won 13 seats to the UDF's 11. The following are the winners in the block pancnayats: Paul Pathickan (Congress) in the Taluk Hospital Ward, Perumbavoor Municipality; Valsala (UDF-backed independent) in the Pothunkal Ward in Nilambur Block Panchahyat and K. C. Velayudhan (CPI-M) in the Eengapuzha Ward of Koduvally Block Panchayat. The following are the winners in the grama panchayats: Denzel Castro (Congress) Pallithura Ward, Vizhinjam Grama Panchayat; G. Satheesan Nair (CPI-M), Punnaikunnam Ward, Mangalapuram; Vijayakumaran Nair (CPI-M), Ajayapuram, Panavoor; S. Radhakrishnan (CPI-M), LPS Ward, Azhoor; M. Leelavathy (Congress), Kavalayoor Ward, Manampoor; Jose Antony (Congress), Arinalloor North Ward, Thevalakkara; T. S. joy (CPI-M), Cheriyapozhi Ward, Mararikkulam West; Susan Kunjumon (Congress), Nattakam Ward, Nattakam; P. C. Saleena (CPI-M), Kanam Ward, Vazhoor; Arup Bhaskaran (CPI-M), Kaliyar Estate Ward, Kodikkulam; Shine John (Congress), Panchayat Office Ward, Avoli; P. V. Wilson (Congress), Mahatma Ward, Valappad; K. V. Mony (CPI), Chittissery South Ward, Nenmanikkara; P. R. Kannan (CPI), Achamkandam Ward in Perinajanam; K. Raman Kutty (CPI-M), Vellinezhi Ward, Vellinezhi; Muhammed Hassan (Congres), Pantharangadi Ward, Thirurangadi; P. Beeran Haji (CPI), Vanneri Ward, Perumpadapp; Ratnam (CPI-M), Varakkan Padiyam Ward, Vettom; Bindu (CPI-M), Karayathodi Ward, Panagad; O. K. Rajesh Kumar (Congress), Karakkunnu Ward, Velam and Chandran (CPI-M), Vallath Kunnu Ward, Onchiyam. A KPCC pressnote described the performance of the UDF remarkable as the alliance had been able to wrest three seats from the CPI(M) and one from the BJP and improve upon its performance in the last round of the byelections. The KPCC attributed the UDF's better showing in the bypolls to what it termed the administrative failure of the LDF Government.
