SBT slashes home loan interest

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: State Bank of Travancore has slashed the interest on home loans. The revised interest with floating rates for a tenure up to five years will be 10.5 per cent and at fixed rate 12.5 per cent only. For loans of tenure above five years and up to 10 years, the interest at floating rate will be 11 per cent and at fixed rate 12.5 per cent. It will be 11 per cent at floating rate for loans of tenure above 10 years and up to 20 years as per the revision. The interest reduction will be in effect from May 9. — Special Correspondent

VS writes to Lalu

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan has asked Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav to issue immediate directions to those concerned to abandon the move to set up the Salem Railway Division in its present form. In a letter, sent on Thursday, the Chief Minister also placed on record his strong protest at the creation of the division ignoring the interests of Kerala. The Chief Minister said the division should be formed only after solving the problems pointed out by the State and after adequate discussions. - Special Correspondent

Land acquisition to be expedited

Thiruvananthapuram: A high-level meeting convened by Minister for Home Kodiyeri Balakrishnan here on Thursday decided to speed up land acquisition for the Kannur airport. Officials will be appointed for the purpose soon. Special arrangement will be made to complete the survey formalities before that. The meeting was attended by Minister for Industries Elamaram Karim, Minister for Revenue K.P. Rajendran, Revenue Secretary Nivedita P. Haran and the Kinfra MD. — Special Correspondent

Ezhava Mahajana Sabha protest

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Ezhava Mahajana Sabha has accused the advisory committee headed by Justice Ramakrishnan of meddling with the administrative affairs of the Sree Narayana Dharma Sanghom Trust. The sabha central secretariat meeting held on Friday said that as per the Supreme Court directions, the committee had only the right to advise the trust and should not interfere with its administrative matters. The formation of sub-committees had given rise to confusion, the meeting felt. Sabha president S. Suvarna Kumar presided over the meeting. General secretary A. KONDOTTY: The Purogamana Kala Sahithya Sangham will hold its district conference at Moyinkutty Vaidyar Memorial here on Sunday and Monday. Novelist C. Body found

THRISSUR: Dorai Babu, who was in the goonda list of the Nedupuzha police station, was hacked to death allegedly by a gang in front of a house at Valialukkal on Thursday night, according to the police.

The police said that a car allegedly used by the gang knocked Babu down. The gang chased him as he ran into a house. The police said that he was hacked to death as women and children of the house watched. Staff Reporter

THRISSUR: Various programmes will be held at Irinjalakuda from May 11 to 13 as part of Koodiyattom maestro Ammannur Madhava Chakyar's 90th birthday celebrations. Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi chairman Murali will inaugurate the programmes at Natanakairali. Other programmes on May 11 include a discussion on Ammanur's art, presentation of Koodiyattom (`Agnipravesankam'), Manipuri dance by Singhajit Singh and a Carnatic vocal recital by the Malladi brothers. Passenger trains cancelled

KOCHI: The Railways have cancelled the Ernakulam-Kayamkulam and Kayamkulam-Ernakulam passenger trains (train no. 343 and 344) on May 12, 15, 17 and 19. This is to carry out engineering work at the Kottayam railway station for renewal of points and crossings. Rail lines will be blocked there for four hours on the days from 11.15 a.m. — Staff Reporter

Four injured in attack

Kasaragod: Four persons were injured in an attack with swords at Munnumkuzhy, Uppala, on Wednesday night. The police said Imran Khan, 21, Muhammed Hashim, 17, Muhammed Hanifa, 20, and Jabbar, 20, had been admitted to Kumbala government hospital. Two groups had clashed in area last week. The police suspect that the attack is a sequel to it.
