Top honours for `Ghaa' in State-level competition

  • Most of the plays staged in Kosali dialect
  • Ashok Kumar adjudged the best director

    BERHAMPUR: `Ghaa', a play produced by Abarnagunda Natya Sansad of Padampur, was adjudged best play at the State-level short play competition at Bhawanipatna in Kalahandi district that concluded on Wednesday night.

    The competition was organised by the Kalahandi Kalakar Sangha in memory of great theatre personality of Kalahandi district Prafula Kumar Ratha. Twenty-one short plays were enacted during the competition. Famous playwright Ramesh Panigrahi, director and actor Narendra Mishra and noted stage personality Raju Padhi comprised the panel of judges at the competition.

    Uniqueness

    The uniqueness of the drama competition was that most of the plays were in the Kosali dialect. The best play of this competition `Ghaa' was a unique love story of a blind and a dumb, who live on a railway platform. According to Mr Padhi within the limitations the director and actors of this play managed to express the romantic communication that can exist between a blind and dumb, which very few among us can notice. Ashok Kumar Bahidar was adjudged the best director and Subhrta Bahidar won the best playwright award. The best actor of the competition was Sanjiv Meher while the honours went to Laxmipriya Padhi among the actresses.

    Best child artiste

    Mamata Patnaik, who played the role of an AIDS afflicted child in the play `Chini', grabbed the best child artiste award. The play tried to depict the problems of AIDS through the day-to-day life full of mischievous activities of children in a family.

    `Kuili Kuili Kie Raja' a play displaying problems of displacement due to industrialisation in Kalahandi district drew attention for its use of tribal tunes and dances. It got the best music direction award. The award for best stage-craft went to the play `Natua', a play based on the life of an artiste who is unable to leave his profession despite problems in his personal life.
