KARIMNAGAR: Three children drowned when they were playing in a water tank in Garrepalli of Sultanabad mandal on Thursday. Locals and family members tried to rescue them but in vain. The victims were: C. Rekha (12), C. Jamuna (10) and Venkati (15). - Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Shanta Sinha, Chairperson, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, on Thursday received the Die Goldene Feder-2007 award from Bauer Publishing House, a leading publishing house in Europe, in Hamburg. HYDERABAD: Ch.K. Durga Rao, Special Judge for trial of cases under SCs and STs (Prevention of Atrocities) Act-cum-VIII Additional District and Sessions Judge, Nizamabad, has been appointed Registrar (Management) of the High Court. He will take over on May 21. - Special Correspondent

Mantralayam visit

KURNOOL: Karnataka Chief Minister Kumaraswamy worshipped Sri Raghavendra Swamy at Mantralayam on Thursday. He was accompanied by members of his family. Farmer ends life

KADAPA: A farmer Sravanagari Gurumurthy, 45, unable to clear debts to the tune of Rs. 4.50 lakhs, committed suicide by consuming pesticide at Gobburivaripalle village in Obulavaripalle mandal on Thursday.

He could only partly clear his debts by selling away one-and-half acres of land, the police said. — Staff Reporter

Demonstration staged

KURNOOL: Activists of Kula Vyathireka Porata Samithi staged a demonstration at the collectorate here on Thursday accusing officials of failing to take action against those who had indulged in atrocities against Dalits at Rathana village.

They said the Dalits had entered a temple as part of the campaign by CPI(M) last month but the village elders fined them. — Staff Reporter

Magisterial probe

KADAPA: P.V. Subramanyeswara Reddy, Kadapa RDO, will conduct a magisterial enquiry on May 19 into the death of a life convict N. Chinna Venkata Reddy, who died in Kadapa Central prison on June 30, 1999.

The deceased belonged to Moillacheruvu village in Veerapunayunipalle mandal. The RDO called upon interested persons to depose before him on the said date.— Staff Reporter

Assumes charge

KADAPA: N.S.C. Solomon Raju assumed charge as APSRTC Kadapa Regional Manager on Thursday. He was the Regional Manager at Ongole prior to this posting.

IIT Medak classes from 2009

Sangareddy: Medak district administration, which has completed the survey of lands, allocated for the establishment of an Indian Institute of technology near Kandi, hopes that classes would begin from 2009. However, the further scrutiny of the lands by another committee from the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development has not taken place so far. - Staff Reporter

CPI stages dharna

Sangareddy: Oustees of expansion work on National Highway nine near RC Puram organised a rally to the Collector's office here under the leadership of CPI Medak committee demanding alternative house sites. They submitted a memorandum to the District revenue officer I. Praksh Kumar asking him to speed up the process of surveying the alternative site promised for them near Kohir.

Two killed in accident

Sangareddy: Two contract workers -- Vaikuntam Sudhakar and K.Anjaneyulu of Kadiri in Aanantpur district-- were killed and four more injured in an accident near Kistareddypet village in Patancheru mandal on Thursday. The accident occurred when the driver of the tractor lost control while negotiating a steep gradient. Two escaped without injuries. — Staff Reporter

Bags rice exporter award

Kakinada: Ms Shivnath Rai Harnaraian (India) Ltd, New Delhi, has received the largest exporter of rice award this year also from the Agriculture and Processed Food Export Development Authority (APEDA), according to Sai Kale, managing partner, ACT Forwarders. It was for the 14th time that the company had received such award, he said. - Correspondent

Arrangements in place for ICET

Kakinada: Foolproof arrangements were made for conducting of ICET-2007 at 10 centres in Kakinada region on May 12, according to B. Kuberudu, regional coordinator and chief of MBA in Andhra University PG centre.

He said 4092 students had registered for taking the examination and senior lecturers were appointed observers.

Regarding the hall tickets, he said, they were already dispatched to eligible students and if any one did not receive, they should download the same through Internet. - Correspondent

Three of a family suffer burns

VIZIANAGARAM: Three members of a family in Chikkala Veedhi under II town police station limits here suffered burns when LPG stove caught fire in their house in the early hours on Thursday. According to Sub-divisional police officer K.K.Achari, Vijayalakshmi and her daughter Vishala Sai forgot to turn off gas cylinder before retiring to bed. However, fire broke out when her husband Kandi Ramu switched on the light. They were rushed to K.G.Hospital in Visakhapatnam. _ Correspondent

Excel award for Vasavi Club

Kakinada: The Vasavi Club has bagged as many as seven awards, including the Excel award, considered to be the most prestigious in recognition of its services among 40 clubs in East and West Godavari districts for the year 2006-07, according to Gullapudi Babji, outgoing president of the club.
