LIKE A PACK OF CARDS: A building collapses in Surat on Thursday. The fire brigade evacuated the occupants in time.

Surat: A four-storey building collapsed here on Thursday, but there were no casualties as the fire brigade evacuated the occupants in time.

Occupants of Firdosh Guest House, located in the Kamela Darwaja area, found the building had tilted and called the fire brigade. The entire building was evacuated, fire brigade officials said.

Later in the day, the building, which had two big hoardings atop it, collapsed.

The Surat Municipal Corporation started an investigation into the collapse of the building, constructed in the early 1980s, official sources said. ``As of now, we have found that the structural engineering of the building was not up to the mark,'' officials taking part in the investigation said.

``The two huge hoardings atop the building may have also created pressure on its foundation.''
