BANGALORE: To create awareness about the need to "save Bangalore" by pressuring the authorities and getting civic problems solved, the Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) has launched a public campaign in the city.

The campaign, comprising public meetings, mobile van meetings and distribution of pamphlets in the old and new areas will culminate at convention on May 19 at the Senate Hall on Central College campus.

SUCI State Secretariat member M.N. Sriram told presspersons on Thursday that several civic problems such as the increasing stray dog menace, garbage clearance, water scarcity and chaotic traffic will be discussed in detail at the convention. "We will submit a memorandum to Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy after the convention," he said.

SUCI wants the Government to prepare a pro-people and cost-effective blueprint for the overall development of Bangalore. The other demands included a comprehensive plan to tackle traffic woes, construction of need-based and scientifically designed flyovers and grade separators and evolving low-cost modes of transport.

More schools sought

"We will demand the Government to set up more Government and BBMP schools and hospitals. We are trying to create a movement to rid the city of all its ills and make it a cleaner and safer place to live," Mr. Sriram said.

During the campaign, SUCI was setting up local level citizens' committees and a larger committee would be set up to take up the issues with the organisations concerned, he added.
