Auto-thief nabbed; car seized

NEW DELHI: A young man has been arrested at Kalkaji here for alleged involvement in several cases of auto-theft. Two stolen cars have allegedly been seized from him.

Acting on a tip-off, a trap was laid near Paharpur jungle on Monday and Anand alias Tyson was arrested. He along with his accomplices would steal cars from South Delhi and disposed them of in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, the police said.

Shopkeeper's body recovered

NEW DELHI: The body of a 26-year-old garment shopkeeper has been recovered from the Yamuna at Kotwali here. He had been missing for the past four days.

According to the police, Sumit Chauhan, a resident of Gandhi Nagar, went to Ghaziabad on Monday afternoon to collect money from his clients. But he did not return and later his body was recovered from the Yamuna on Wednesday night. Sumit's father alleged that the police refused to register his complaint after he went missing. Head constable Ved Prakash posted at the Gandhi Nagar police station has been suspended.

`Sealing drive poses threat to traders'

NEW DELHI: In view of the recent Supreme Court order on sealing, the Confederation of All-India Traders has urged Union Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy to constitute a joint working group comprising officials from the Union Government, the Delhi Government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

In a letter to Mr. Reddy, CAIT said the continued sealing drive posed a threat to the livelihood of traders in the city.

Bal Panchayat interaction with media

NEW DELHI: Around a dozen children of Bal Panchayat -- a congregation of children -- interacted with the media and civil society organisations recently over issues that plague children in the Capital.

Holding a press meet titled as "Children as change agents" at Rajendra Bhavan here, the children expressed their viewpoint on such issues as child labour, child safety and security.

Giving a brief account of the activities of Bal Panchayat, Arti and Ajay highlighted its work for the mental and physical development of poor and undernourished children of squatters and slums. Nirmala spoke on child safety and Neelam on child labour.

Backed by a consortium of Plan International, Community Aid and Sponsorship Programme (CASP) and Grassroots Media Initiative, the Bal Panchayat came into being in 1998. It has had over 1,500 young members so far.
