KOCHI: Studies conducted on nine major vegetable oils produced in the world have indicated that coconut oil has the lowest growth in output. The share of coconut oil in the total output of these oils has decreased from 5.73 per cent to 2.95 per cent within a span of over two decades. Studies show a high growth rate for palm oil and palm kernel oil. Chairperson of the Coconut Development Board Minnie Mathew says the highest growth rate of 14 per cent has been recorded by palm oil, followed by palm kernel oil, rapeseed oil, soybean oil, olive oil, sunflower oil, groundnut oil and cottonseed oil. While vegetable oils are produced in many countries, bulk of the consumption is in the developed world. In the European Union, demand comes from increased substitution of mineral oils in industry and the energy sector.
