Staff Reporter
Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala chapter of the National Neonatology Forum has appealed to the Government to make available more funds and nursing staff with specialised training in neonatal care in all major Government hospitals so that more babies of the high-risk/low birth weight categories can be saved. In a statement issued here, forum president and the former head of the neonatal unit at SAT Hospital P.M.C. Nair said at least one nurse should be provided for every four babies in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and they should be encouraged to maintain asepsis protocols strictly. The infection control cell in the hospitals should make it a practice to take weekly culture swabs from the labour room, theatre and NICU.
