This Day That Age
The centenary celebrations of India's First War of Independence got off to a start in the capital on May 10 with a simple ceremony at the Rashtrapathi Bhawan when a book entitled "Eighteen Fifty-Seven," a history of the 1857 struggle, was presented to President Rajendra Prasad by Vice-President Radhakrishnan, President of the Centenary Committee. Prime Minister Nehru, Maulana Azad, Pandit Pant, Dr. B.V. Keskar and Dr. S.N. Sen, the author of the book, were among those present. A similar copy was presented to Mr. Nehru by the Vice-President. In a brief speech, the President said the 1857 freedom struggle was a memorable one and Indians of the present generation should remember it and draw inspiration from it. Dr. Radhakrishnan said the author of the book, Dr. S.N. Sen, an eminent historian, had given an account which was singularly free from passion and prejudice. During these many years the rebellion had been described in different ways - as a military revolt, conflict between progress and reaction and India's first struggle for freedom. Readers of the book would form their own judgment on the nature of that upheaval and how far these characterisations were valid.
