dated May 12, 1957: Celebrations in Pakistan

Week-long official celebrations of the 1857 centenary began all over Pakistan on May 10, the Government having declared the day a public holiday. In a broadcast on the occasion, Prime Minister Suhrawardy called upon the people to pledge themselves afresh to the cause of freedom and democracy. In his view, the 1857 freedom struggle was essentially democratic in character insofar as it was an upsurge of the masses. Celebrations in Karachi were highlighted by the laying of the foundation-stone of a memorial to the heroes of the 1857 war. The P and T Department brought out special stamps.
