PUDUCHERRY : Commandant Arun Saxena took charge as the new commanding officer (CO) of the Coast Guard Station in Ariankuppam, Puducherry, at a function on Friday.

He was presented a guard of honour and later the outgoing Commandant N. Somasundaram handed over the baton of the CO to the new chief.

Mr. Saxena was previously the Commanding Officer and District Commandant of the CG base at Campbell Bay in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

After taking charge, he called on Inspector General of Police K. Kishan Kumar at the Police Headquarters. He will call on the Lieutenant Governor Mukut Mithi on Saturday.

The outgoing Commandant will take command of the CG ship Priyadarshini, a fast patrol vessel based at Vishakapatnam. He was the first CO of the Puducherry station, which was commissioned on February 10, 2006.

Preliminary work over

He told The Hindu that preliminary work for acquiring 25 acres of land at Veerampattinam for installing infrastructure for the Station had been completed. The CG had already handed over Rs 28 lakh for 18 acres and the balance amount for seven acres would be paid once the Defence Ministry gave its approval, he added.

He said that the marine agency had sought an additional 25 acres for further expansion of the base, including the setting up of a marine police station.
