Privatisation of garbage cleaning work opposed

Special Correspondent

Puducherry: The Puducherry State council of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) has protested against the privatisation of the garbage cleaning work in the municipal and commune panchayat limits in Puducherry.

In a release here on Thursday, AITUC general Secretary V.S. Abishegam said the sanitary work was an essential duty of the municipal bodies and for decades workers employed by the civic bodies did the work.

`An injustice'

But handing it over to private players was an injustice the civic authorities were meting out to the poor workers.

There should be recruitment of more workers by the civic authorities and ensure that the garbage cleaning work was done by the municipalities directly.

`Regularise daily

wage workers'

Mr. Abishegam said the employees who had completed two years of work in sanitation wing as daily wage workers should be confirmed.

There should be implementation of welfare schemes for the workers.
