Pollution threat to Rakaskop lake ruled out

Staff Correspondent

Belgaum: The managing director of Nalawade Sugar Mills Ltd., which is coming up at Mhalunge village, Ramesh Doddannavar, has sought to remove the apprehensions of the possible threat of pollution to the Rakaskop lake/dam and claimed that there was no possibility of any waste water from the sugar factory percolating into the dam and its catchment areas or the Markandeya river.

The sugar mills is coming up at Mhalunge in Chandgad taluk of Kolhapur district in Maharashtra having common boundary with Belgaum taluk and close to Rakaskop lake (Rakaskop dam), which is the major source drinking water supply for the people of Belgaum city. Mr. Doddannavar said the factory site is located more than 5 km away from the dam and "there is no proposal to establish a distillery unit at this site." The management had obtained clearances from the Union and State Governments. It has observed all pollution control norms and taken steps to install an effluent treatment plant with double stage aeration and clarifier.

The final treated effluent water would be of 30 BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand), which could be directly used for irrigation.

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board had given its consent to the establishment of the unit only after detailed inspections, survey and public hearing.
