News Analysis
In a report "Chaudhury's petition for full Bench" (`International" page, May 9, 2007), the first paragraph was: "Acting Chief Justice of Pakistan, Rana Bhagwandas, constituted a full Bench on Tuesday to hear the constitutional petition by Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhary challenging the filing of the reference against him", while the third paragraph was: "The full court, comprising 14 judges of the Supreme Court, will hear the petition daily from May 14. The full Bench excludes the Chief Justice, three judges who are on the panel of the Supreme Judicial Council, and one other judge who earlier recused himself." A reader points out that the report has used "Full Bench" and "Full Court" as interchangeable terms, but they are in fact different in meaning and connotation. Technically, it is neither a Full Bench nor a Full Court, but can be described as a 14-judge Bench. The Special Correspondent clarifies that the reader is right. It is not a bench, but a Full Court, although five judges are not on it. The Chief Justice is "non-functional", having been restrained by the Supreme Judicial Council from discharging his duties. Acting Chief Justice Rana Bhagwandas and two other judges are on the Supreme Judicial Council. One other judge who was in the Supreme Judicial Council as initially constituted and who signed the restraining order against Iftikhar Chaudhary is also not in the Full Court. The expansion of TERI was given as the Tata Energy Resource Institution in a report "Panel on climate change" (Print/Internet editions and the e-paper, May 11, 2007). Rajiv Chhibber, Manager (Corporate Communications), The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), points out that the name is incorrect and that the organisation is now The Energy and Resources Institute. (Six years ago, it was known as the Tata Energy Resource Institute.) A report "Naren aiming for the podium" ("Sport", May 11, 2007) stated that Jussi Valimaki is from Japan. The Sports Desk clarifies that it was an error in the PTI report. Valimaki is from Finland. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible.
