CBI probe

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi deserves praise for handing over to the CBI the investigation into the events that led to the attacks on the Madurai office of the newspaper Dinakaran and Sun TV on Wednesday, despite the fact that his son's supporters are alleged to have been involved in the violence that claimed three lives. The survey on the succession issue published in Dinakaran added fuel to the ongoing power tussle in the party. It was rather premature and immature for the newspaper to have embarked upon such a misadventure.

It will be no exaggeration to say that the demand in The Hindu editorial "Murderous attack on media freedom" (May 10) made the Government opt for a CBI enquiry. The media should learn to follow journalistic ethics such as truth telling and fair reporting, unmindful of their organisational allegiance at least on sensitive issues.

The death of three persons is no doubt unfortunate. But the attack was a local incident in which known supporters of one group vented their anger against members of another. A CBI inquiry is uncalled for, as there was no conspiracy angle involved. When the CBI is already overburdened, it is unfair to make it investigate a dispute in a family, the head of which is a Chief Minister.
