Synthetic courts at the Mysore Tennis Club

Special Correspondent

MYSORE: Come September, the Mysore Tennis Club will have its own synthetic courts, thus fulfilling a long felt need of tennis players in the city.

The club is going ahead with an ambitious project to build three courts at the club, thanks to a grant of Rs.6.5 lakhs by Dr. M.A.M. Ramswamy from his MP's funds.

"The grant had come in handy and we are going with our job and already we have levelled the centre court and asphalting will begin soon. The courts will be built by Atul Gurjar, a veteran player from Bangalore, who has the expertise in laying synthetic courts," said Mr. H.L.N. Srinivasa Urs, secretary of the MTC in a chat with The Hindu.

Once the synthetic courts are completed, MTC plans to install a seating gallery.

The club has a hoary past dating way back to 1969 with just two courts and it now has eight clay courts. Ramanathan Krishnan and Ramesh Krishnan, Vijay Amritraj, Sashi Menon and S. Narendranath have all played here.

MTC, over the years, has produced several leading national players, including Prahlad Srinath and Rohan Bopanna.

What makes the MTC a hot spot for tennis in Mysore is the paltry charges of a one-time registration fee of Rs. 1000 and a monthly fee of just Rs.100 — perhaps the lowest in the country. And youngsters below 12 have free access to courts.

The MTC also runs an efficient training programme under coach L.P. Madhukar.

Shimoga runs riot

Shimoga trounced Davangere 11-2 and Kolar defeated Mysore 5-2 in the inter-District football tournament in progress at the Football Stadium in Bangalore on Friday.
