Uzbekistan downs India

NEW DELHI: The feeble Indian hopes were dashed as the team went down 1-2 to Uzbekistan in the quarterfinals of the Asia-Oceania Junior Fed Cup under-16 girls tennis tournament at the National Tennis Centre, Kuala Lumpur, on Friday.

Uzbekistan won both the singles, dropping nine games in all, as V. Archana and Kyra Shroff were unable to stand up to the challenge against Aleksandra Kolesnichenko and Albina Khabibulina.

In the doubles, the Indian girls led 7-5, 2-3 when the Uzbek team retired.

India will next play Indonesia in the play-off for the fifth position. The fifth-seeded China and the eighth-seeded Korea are also in the race for the same.

The results (quarterfinals): Australia beat Indonesia 2-1; Uzbekistan beat India 2-1 (Aleksandra Kolesnichenko bt V. Archana 6-0, 6-3; Albina Khabibulina bt Kyra Shroff 6-1, 7-5; Albina and Aleksandra lost to Tanvi Shah and Kyra Shroff 5-7, 3-2 (retired)); Thailand beat Korea 3-0; Japan beat China 3-0.
