Man kills wife, daughter

CUDDALORE: Jayaraman (52), a farm labourer residing at Agaranallur near Chidambaram, attacked his wife and daughter with a crowbar on Friday.

While his wife Chellapapu died on the spot, Sangeetha succumbed to her injuries in a hospital. The couple had a wordy quarrel over choosing a bride for their son J. Selvam (25). Jayaraman, in a fit of rage, repeatedly hit his wife with the crowbar. When Sangeetha, a physically challenged girl, intervened she also received the blows. The police have arrested Jayaraman. — Special Correspondent

Fire in cracker unit, 2 critically injured

SIVAKASI: Two employees were critically injured in a fire accident at a cracker-making unit at Maraneri near here on Friday.

The police said the fire broke out when V. Murugan (35) of Mela Amathur and K. Pandarinathan (40) of Viswanatham were mixing chemicals to make crackers at around 8.15 a.m. They were admitted to the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai. — Staff Reporter

Premkumar surrenders

MADURAI: Superintendent of Police K. Premkumar, who is presently under suspension, surrendered in a fast track court here on Friday. He was released on bail. An arrest warrant was issued against Mr. Premkumar after the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court set aside a lower court order in an assault case and sentenced him to undergo one month simple imprisonment. — Special Correspondent

6 fishermen missing

NAGAPATTINAM: Six fishermen who ventured into the sea in a fibreglass boat from Tirumullaivasal in Nagapattinam district on May 8 did not return to the shore. Nagapattinam Collector Tenkasi S. Jawahar on Friday asked the Coast Guard to trace the fishermen. — Special Correspondent

Sri Lankan boat recovered

RAMANATHAPURAM: The police on Thursday recovered a fibreglass boat of Sri Lanka from Manankudi shore near Uchipuli. There was no information about how it reached the shore and who came from Sri Lanka. — Staff Reporter

Podhigai express frequency increased

CHENNAI: Frequency of the Chennai Egmore-Tenkasi Podhigai express trains will be increased from tri-weekly to six days a week with effect from June 1. The Chennai Egmore- Tenkasi Podhigai Express (2661) will not run on Tuesdays and the Tenkasi-Chennai Egmore Podhigai Express (2662) will not run on Wednesdays.

Additional special trains will be operated from Chennai Central to Coimbatore to clear extra rush of passengers. Train no 0625 will leave Chennai Central at 10.30 pm on all Wednesdays and reach Coimbatore at 8.15 am the next day. In the return direction, train no 0626 will leave Coimbatore at 11.45 pm on all Thursdays and arrive here at 8.30 am the next day. The train will stop at Arakkonam, Katpadi, Jolarpettai, Salem, Erode and Tiruppur. Train No. 0626 will stop at Perambur also. The service will be available from May 16 to June 27 from Central and from May 17 to June 28 from Coimbatore. — Special Correspondent

Perambalur Collector receives petitions

PERAMBALUR: The Collector, Anil Meshram, disbursed welfare assistance to the tune of Rs. 3.79 lakh under various Government schemes to 128 people belonging to weaker sections during a mass contact programme in Asaveerankudikadu near Senthurai on Wednesday.

He received grievance petitions and directed the officials to take immediate action.

The chairperson of Senthurai panchayat union, S. Selvi, the district panchayat councillors, Siva Selvakumar and Pandian, and the Asaveerankudikadu village panchayat chief, Anantha Ranganayaki, spoke.

The District Revenue Officer, K. Baskaran, the Project Officer of District Rural Development Agency, S. Ayyaru, and officials of various departments participated.

Tirunallar festival starts tomorrow

KARAIKAL: The annual `Brahmotsavam' of Dharbaranyeswaraswamy Temple, popularly known as Saneeswara Bhagawan Temple, at Tirunallar begins on Sunday with `Dwajarohanam' (hoisting of the temple flag).

The festival concludes on May 31.

The car festival will take place on May 27 and the float, on May 29.

Temple authorities and the district administration have made elaborate arrangements for the festival.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 75.54 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Friday. The inflow was 1,575 cusecs and the discharge, 1,500 cusecs.

Three-member gang murders man

Tuticorin: A three-member gang allegedly murdered M. Bhaskar (40) at Gomezpuram near here in the early hours of Thursday.

The Thalamuthu Nagar police have registered a case and are on the look out for the gang members, sources said.

Nurses get cell phones

Nagercoil: The district administration distributed cell phones to 267 village health nurses working in 31 primary health centres, said the Kanyakumari Collector (in-charge), B. Jothi Nirmala.

The exercise was aimed at controlling deaths of women and newborns during delivery owing to lack of proper medical care in emergency situations.

Those in need of emergency medical care could contact the village health nurses in their mobile phone, the Collector said.

Admissions begin

SALEM: The Government School for Blinds in Salem has started admissions for the academic year 2007-08.

Parents in the district can admit their visually challenged children aged between 5 and 13 in the school.

A press release from school headmaster K. Vijayalakshmi said that the government would provide free education, uniforms and food to the children.
