KURNOOL: Municipal Council co-opted five members from Minority and other under-represented sections at an extraordinary general body meeting (EGM) here on Friday. P. Girija Reddy, G.L.V. Seshaiah, M.P. Tippanna, Rameeza Bi and Abdul Kalam were elected with the backing of 31 Congress members in the House. Three others proposed by CPI(M), CPI and TDP polled only 11 votes. Congress member Laxmi Devi created a flutter in the House by refusing to raise her hand in support of the candidates and remarked that she was not consulted by anyone before the election. Those who were "happy" with the process could support the election, she said. Other Congress members pacified her.
Rumblings
Mayor S. Raghurami Reddy, who chaired the extraordinary session, also made a scene in the House by blocking his ears with hands when BJP member Krishna Kumari insisted upon discussing people's problems. Mr. Reddy told the members that the session was convened to co-opt members from Minority communities.
