KOZHIKODE: The Hindu Aikya Vedi urged the Government to hold consultations with Hindu religious leaders and organisations before enacting the legislation to form the Malabar Devaswom Board. Vedi leaders believe such consultations are necessary since the moves to constitute Malabar Devaswom Board under the provisions of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Act will be disastrous for temples in northern Kerala. Vedi secretary P.K. Sahadevan and Saratchandra Kartha, chairman, Kshetra Karma Ekopana Samithi, said here on Friday that a strong resistance would be put up against the moves of the Government to gain control over temples in northern Kerala. They said nearly 1,700 temples in the State were already under the control of a Government Secretary. The legislations governing Devaswoms of Kochi and Travancore had led to loss of the autonomy enjoyed by the temples of that region and enabled non-believers to seize control over temple administrations, they said.
