22 killed as bus falls off bridge over Ganga

HAJIPUR: At least 22 people, including three women and two children, were killed and 16 injured when a bus to Patna from Raxaul fell off the Mahatma Gandhi bridge into the Ganga in Bihar's Vaishali district, about 15 km from Patna, early on Friday morning.

The bus plunged more than 130 feet down on the dry riverbed after the driver lost control of the vehicle which crashed through the cement railing, said Director-General of Police Ashish Ranjan Sinha.

Eight of the 16 injured were said to be in a critical condition. Mr. Sinha said 18 people were killed on the spot while four died on way to hospital here and in Vaishali.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who is away in Delhi to attend to his indisposed wife admitted to a private hospital there, issued a press statement here saying the State Government would probe the reasons behind the accident.

He ordered the State authorities, to make arrangement for paying Rs 50,000 each to the families of the deceased immediately. -
