Row over TTD's twin-dams ends

Special Correspondent

Forest Department penalises construction company for violation of norms

TIRUPATI: The stand off between the Department of Forest and Environment and private construction company in charge of executing the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam's twin-projects of Kumaradhara and Pasupudhara at Tirumala has ended on an amicable note.

This follows the payment of a penalty of Rs.16 lakhs levied on the company by the Department of Forests for the alleged violation of certain environmental norms at the construction site.

The Department of Forests, while giving permission to the contractor to resume the work on the two projects has, however, imposed a condition that it must take steps at once to off set the `damages' it has allegedly caused at the construction sites.

The execution of the projects remained suspended since December last following serious objections raised by the Department of Forests for violation of norms by the construction company.

Violations

The violations were -- dumping excavated earth outside the 12-metre area demarcated for the purpose, non-construction of `demarcation pillars' at the specified areas and damage caused to certain rare species of plants in the area.

Meanwhile, the TTD has expressed satisfaction over the amicable end to the row between and hopes that the dam will be ready soon since all the hurdles in the way were removed.
