Petition against doctors' strike filed

Special Correspondent

Kochi: A writ petition was filed before the Kerala High Court on Friday, seeking to declare illegal the strike called by the Kerala Government Medical College Teachers' Association on May 14 in protest against the suspension of K. Rajmohan, the former Superintendent of Sree Avittom Tirunal (SAT) Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, from service.

The petition was filed by K. Premkumar of Thiruvananthapuram.

Demand to form panel

The petitioner also sought a directive to the State Government to constitute a permanent expert scientific committee to oversee and maintain hygiene in all the Government Medical Colleges and hospitals functioning in the State.

The petitioner also sought that a directive be issued to fill the vacancies in all the Government hospitals.

`Invoke ESMA'

He also sought a directive to the Government to invoke the Essential Service Maintenance Act against doctors who take part in the proposed strike.

The petitioner said M. Rajmohan was suspended in the wake of reported deaths of a number of infants at SAT Hospital due to a hospital-acquired infection. The decision of the association violated the human rights of the patients, the petitioner contended.

The inaction and culpable negligence of the hospital authorities had resulted in the deaths.
