Congress to field U.T. Khader

GULBARGA: The Congress has decided to field U.T. Khader, son of the former legislator U.T. Fareed, in the Assembly byelection from Ullal constituency in Dakshina Kannada district.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president M. Mallikarjun Kharge said here on Friday before leaving for Bangalore that the candidature of Mr. Fareed had been cleared by the high command this morning.

Mr. Kharge said he was confident that the party would retain the Ullal seat. The campaign strategy was being finalised and teams of leaders would intensively tour the constituency, he said.

Warning against fake address proof

BANGALORE: The Commissioner for Food and Civil Supplies has warned that action will be initiated against those who furnish fake rent agreements as address proof along with their applications for ration cards.

In a press release, the Commissioner said the department was issuing applications for ration cards at designated centres in Bangalore city and its outskirts to families that do not possess them.

The Commissioner also appealed to those who already hold a ration card to obtain self-declaration forms from their fair price depots and return them after filling them up.

Absence of officials irks Minister

Kolar: Irked by the unauthorised absence of several officials, including the Commissioner of the Kolar City Municipal Council, Minister for Municipal Administration R. Srinivas has recommended the suspension of three officials of the council.

Mr. Srinivas directed the Additional Director of the department to recommend to the Principal Secretary, Department of Municipal Administration, to suspend Commissioner Sayeeda N. Jabin, manager Nazir and environment officer Mohan.

The Minister, who is in charge of the district, noticed the unauthorised absence during a surprise visit to the office on Thursday. — Staff Correspondent

Application forms unnecessary: Army

Bangalore: The Headquarters, Recruiting Zone, of the Indian Army has said that despite repeated reminders that there are no application forms being issued to join the Army as a sepoy, some people are selling application forms and duping innocent youngsters.

If people come to know that such application forms are being sold, they should bring it to the notice of the authorities concerned or the Headquarters, Recruiting Zone, a release said.

New managing director for BESCOM

HASSAN: Hassan Deputy Commissioner K.H. Aswathanarayana Gowda will succeed Gonal Bhimappa as managing director of the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company. Mr. Bhimappa has taken over as chairman of the Karnataka Public Service Commission.

26 houses to get power connection

DAVANGERE: The Davangere district administration has decided to provide power connections to 26 houses of poor families under the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidhyutikaran Yojana.

Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy will hand over letters sanctioning the connections during his overnight stay at Maduranayakanahalli in Chennagiri taluk, which will be his 26th `grama vastavya'. He will also plant 26 saplings on the occasion. — Staff Correspondent

Ordered to shift

Belgaum: District Magistrate and Deputy Commissioner M.E. Shivalingmurthy has ordered the Riddhi Siddhi Gluco Boils, Ltd., Gokak, to immediately shift its unit. An order was issued on May 9, according to sources here on Friday. The decision has been taken on the basis of the reports of the Director, Factories and Boiler, Bangalore, Department of Fire Services, the Labour Department and Medical Superintendent of ESI Hospital, Belgaum. — Staff Correspondent

Seized

HUBLI: The Hubli Police have seized illicit liquor estimated at Rs. 86,400 and arrested one person on Thursday. The name of the arrested has been given as Hanumant Krishnasa Pawar. They have also seized a three-wheeler goods vehicle allegedly used to transport the liquor. — Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: R. Jagadeesh, Professor of Production and Operations Management at SDM Institute of Management Development, Mysore, has been invited as visiting professor at the Fox School of Business, Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the U.S. to teach a course on operations management for M.B.A. students, according to J.M. Workshop

MYSORE: JSS College of Arts and Commerce and Science, Ooty Road, Mysore, and JSS Women's College, Saraswathipuram, will organise a workshop for economics teachers of undergraduate colleges of University of Mysore for four weeks from May 14. The subject of the workshop is "Econometrics". C.K. Renukarya will be resource person. MYSORE: The Department of Mechanical Engineering, National Institute of Engineering, Mysore, in association with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Malnad College of Engineering, will organise its second edition of National-level paper presentation contest "Cogniescience-07" on Saturday under Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme. L.S. Umesh, vice-president, ACE Manufacturing Systems, will inaugurate the function and deliver keynote address, according to a release from NIE.

Arrested

MYSORE: Kuvempunagar police have arrested three youth on the charge of robbing a man on April 22 and have recovered a diary, torch, spectacles and a motorbike. The police identified them as Y.D. Shankarachari (21) of Mahadevapura, Rajeev (21) of J.P. Nagar and Hemanth (19) J.P. Nagar.

Power shutdown

HUBLI: Owing to urgent repair work, some areas in Hubli will have no power supply on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. according to a release. The areas affected are: Ghodke Plots, Siddarameshwar Nagar, Mayuri Nagar, Anand Nagar, Bharti Nagar, Gollar Colony, Morarji Nagar, Lohia Nagar, Leprosy Hospital and surrounding areas. — Staff Correspondent

Margao peaceful

PANAJI: Margao in south Goa remained peaceful and incident-free on Friday after two days of tension and a day's bandh called on Thursday by traders, citizens and shopkeepers to protest against Wednesday's attack on a city shopkeeper and the alleged police failure to arrest the attackers. The Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry has expressed concern at the turn of events in Margao leading to closure of the market for two days. Condemning the assault on the trader, it said that such incidents should not be given communal colour.

Two killed in road accident

Madikeri: Two persons, both motorcycle riders, were killed when their vehicles were involved in a collision at the Guddehosur Circle, near Kushalnagar in Kodagu district on Friday, according to information reaching here. The dead were identified as Tangaraj (28), a resident of Nakoor village, and Manjunath (38), a police personnel attached to the Siddappur police station. Tangaraj was on his from Kushalnagar to Madikeri while the latter was bound for Kushalnagar from Siddapur. Kushalnagar police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

200 couples get married

BOMMAGATTA (BELLARY DISTRICT): Nearly 200 couples were married at the mass marriage organised by Santosh Lad, Sandur MLA, in memory of his brother Ashok Lad, here on Thursday. Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, his wife Anita, Ministers M.P. Prakash, Iqbal Ansari, Cheluvarayaswamy, and N. Thippanna, former Chairman of Legislative Council, Anil Lad, Kudligi MLA, were present to bless the couples. The Chief Minister said that his Government was committed to the welfare of the people, especially the poor, and had been announcing several programmes to alleviate poverty and help people become economically self-reliant. — Staff Correspondent
