Bangalore: Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly N. Dharam Singh on Friday criticised Labour Minister Iqbal Ansari's statement that women would be banned from working on night shifts. Mr. Singh told presspersons here that the Minister was ignorant of the fact that women are demanding reservation of seats in Parliament and legislatures. Terming the Minister's stand childish and irresponsible, he wanted Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy to pull up his Cabinet colleague for making such statements and spoiling the good reputation that Bangalore had earned internationally. "I do not know who gave such powers to Mr. Ansari and whom he is going to satisfy by issuing such irresponsible statements," the former Chief Minister said. It was strange that Advocate-General Uday Holla also was in the dark and many leading lawyers had condemned the attitude of the Minister. Terming the Chief Minister's treatment of Karnataka State Open University Vice-Chancellor Sudha Rao unbecoming of his stature, the Congress leader wondered what Mr. Kumaraswamy had done to regularise the services of the employees. Such interference would affect the autonomy of universities and no Vice-Chancellor would be able to work with confidence, he said. Mr. Singh said he was happy that the Congress had improved its position in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections and gave credit to Rahul Gandhi, MP, and Priyanka Vadra for it.
