Railway stations in Hubli division to have vending machines

HUBLI: Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd. (IRCTC) plans to set up 34 automatic vending machines (AVMs) at various railway stations in Hubli division within three months.

Speaking at the inauguration of the first AVM at Hubli Railway Station here on Friday, S. Gagarin, chief regional manager, Southern Region, IRCTC, said seven of the 34 AVMs would be installed at the Hubli station.

Six would be installed at the Belgaum station, four each at Gadag and Hospet, three each at Bellary and Londa, two each at Ghataprabha and Vasco da Gama and one each at Dharwad, Bijapur and Koppal stations, he said.

The contract for installing and maintaining the AVMs in various stations of South Western Railway has been awarded to Hindustan Lever Ltd. under the overall supervision of the IRCTC.

The IRCTC plans to set up cell kitchens at important junctions such as Hubli, Bangalore, Arsikere and other stations in order to serve hygienic food to passengers of trains that have no pantry cars attached.

The tender for the Hubli cell kitchen has already been awarded and the kitchen will be commissioned before September 2007.

Earlier Hubli divisional railway manager Rakesh Vatash inaugurated the AVM for dispensing beverages, food and other items installed on Platform No. 2 at Hubli Railway Station.

Mr. Vatash said the objective behind introducing the AVMs was to provide standard products to passengers.

IRCTC area manager B. Ramesh and senior Railway officials Arun Rathod, Ramesh Kambli, G. Nagendra Kumar and H.J. Shiva Prasad were present.
