State Government and capital-based cultural institution to host separate competitions

BHUBANESWAR: Here are reasons to rejoice for scores of aspiring Odissi dancers, singers and instrumentalists.

The government and a Capital-based cultural institution have announced to host separate talent hunt competitions to spot out talents at the grassroots level.

The Department of Culture, in association with the Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi and the district councils of culture, will host district-level competitions among budding artistes in the field of Odissi mardal, tabla, sitar and flute at all the 30 district headquarters on May 27.

Culture Secretary Gopinath Mohanty, who has already written to all the district Collectors , told The Hindu that the competition would be held among artistes in the age group of 14 to 20 years.

Each participant will be required to deposit Rs.50 as entry fee while the district council of culture will bear the travelling expenses of the , the secretary said.

In the next phase, district toppers of each faculty will be invited to participate in the State-level competition at the State capital on June 10.

City-based cultural organisation Devdasi Nrutya Mandir has also announced to host a state-level Odissi dance competition-cum-festival for young dancers - Naveen Kalakar - in the capital on June 2 and 3 in association with Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya (USM).
